Lenovo plans on launching Chrome OS version of YogaBook next year

Lenovo’s Yoga Books are some of the most innovative notebooks around. Certainly more so than Apple’s stylish MacBook Pros in terms of design. But these are Windows-based notebooks which means they are bound to be expensive. To bring them to the masses, Lenovo is looking at launching Chrome OS based versions of the YogaBook in 2017 claims a report by LAPTOP Magazine.

Lenovo’s VP and General Manager for Android and Chrome computing business group Jeff Meredith has confirmed the same to the publication. Already, there are versions of the YogaBook that’s based on Windows and Android, so this points towards the popularity of Chrome OS especially in the education sector.

"We've had a lot of interest. It's an interesting idea for education, especially with the form factor. Over time, we probably see the Android and Chrome versions melding together, especially based on the fact that we've now seen Chrome roll out the Google Play store capability into Chrome. We'll probably maintain the three distinctive products throughout this year at least," said Meredith said about the possibility of the Chrome OS-powered YogaBook.

Meredith also claimed that new features like Real Pen which Lenovo introduced for the Android version of the Yoga Book at IFA in September will also be available on the Chrome OS model.

The very same laptop was launched in India last week for Rs 49,990 and is available on e-commerce website Flipkart. That being said, in India, Lenovo has chosen to launch the Windows model, not the Android model pointing towards the usability of the Windows model.

The Yoga Book in India has a halo keyboard which is a touch enabled keyboard and the Real Pen. It has a 10.1-inch full HD screen, an Intel Atom X5 quad-core processor clocked at 2.4GHz and 4GB RAM. It also comes with 64GB of internal storage and also has a microSD card slot supporting up to 128GB memory cards.

Chrome OS based products over the last few years have grown in popularity and have started to give Windows based alternatives stiff competition in developed markets like the US. That being said, the future of the platform is clouded as there are rumours rife which suggest that Google is planning to merge Android and Chrome OS and create one OS called Andromeda.

Lenovo ZUK Edge to launch on December 20

Lenovo’s ZUK Edge has been the talk of the town since quite some time now, and Lenovo has finally lifted the veil over the release date for the smartphone. The device is set to be unveiled on the coming Tuesday, December 20.

The smartphone has been surrounded by leaks and rumours. Current leaks suggest that the smartphone sports a 5.5-inch full-HD display with a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels. The display sports minimal bezels, hence the ‘Edge’ nomenclature. Moreover, these bezels also come with a slight curve around the edges.

Coming to the hardware on the smartphone, ZUK Edge is reportedly said to be rocking Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 821 chipset paired with Adreno 530GPU. The device is expected to be available in 4GB and 6GB RAM variants, and 64GB or 128GB storage variants.

Coming to the optics on the ZUK Edge, the device is expected to sport a 13-megapixel primary rear camera and an 8-megapixel selfie camera at the front. There are no further details for the specs of the camera as of now.

The device is expected to run on Android 6.0 Marshmallow with ZUK’s near stock Android skin on top, which has been the case with almost all ZUK smartphones in the past. For battery, the device is said to sport a 3000mAh battery. The device would charge using a USB Type-C connector.

There are no hints for the device to support quick-charging as of now, but considering it’s rocking the 821 chipset, which already comes with Quick Charge 3.0, we could expect the quick charging capabilities be present on the ZUK Edge.

Motorola’s Moto Z phones are slick modular smartphones

Slick is the word that comes to mind when you talk about Motorola’s new Moto Z phones launched in India. Both phones; the Moto Z and the cheaper and thicker Moto Z Play will be available later this month on October 17 on Flipkart and Amazon and these phones also represent the future of the smartphone.

Like LG’s G5 which launched earlier this year, the Moto twins are modular smartphones. The functionality of these phones can be augmented with mods which seamlessly can be strapped on to the device using magnetic connection points.

So while LG jumped the industry with a modular smartphone of its own, its implementation was horrendous and clearly wasn’t something that most users would’ve enjoyed. LG’s system entailed the user snapping open a section of the phone, detaching the battery and connecting the mod with it.

It was an ugly implementation to say the least. Motorola has a slick and functional solution. Mods magnetically connect on the back and the phone intelligently understands when the mod is enabled.

There are some useful mods too. There’s one from Hasselblad, which costs a bomb at Rs 14,999, but it adds a 10x optical zoom and full point and shoot camera system to the device. There’s a boombox mod from JBL which also doubles as a battery mod. This one comes for less at Rs 5,999.

Then there are other novel things like a battery mod essentially a battery attachment giving the phones monstrous battery life and a projector mod which can come in handy for watching movies or showcasing pictures.
There are some back plates too which come in various materials that include wood and a matte finish plastic.

The phones themselves too seemed to be very good in the short time I spent with them. The cheaper Moto Z Play is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chip and has a 5.5-inch full HD screen. It also rocks a large 3,500mAh battery. The phone looks gorgeous clad in metal and glass and frankly looks sexier than the iPhone 7, but it isn’t the most ergonomic thing to hold in the hand. It also is a massive fingerprint magnet on the back which is home to a glossy plastic finish.

The flagship Moto Z is drop dead gorgeous. Copious amounts of metal has been used in its construction and the phone feels like a really really expensive phone. It is also the slimmest 2016 flagship phone at 5.9mm. That’s drastically thinner than the iPhone 7 and the Galaxy S7.

This also means that Motorola had to remove the 3.5mm jack something what Apple did with the iPhone 7. But Motorola’s reasons seem more genuine and understandable. There’s an adaptor for the same in the box which can be used with the USB Type C connector on the phone.

Processing chops wise, the phone has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 four core processor, 4 gigs of RAM and 64GB of storage which can be further expanded. There’s also vibrant 5.5-inch quad HD OLED screen. The battery on this one is smaller 2,600mAh, so you may need the battery mod if you’re a heavy duty user.

Both phones come with decent camera hardware too. The high-end Z gets a 13-megapixel sensor on the back with an optically stabilised lens. The Z Play gets a 16-megapixel snapper which is electronically stabilised.

Both are also running a stockish version of Android Marshmallow and Lenovo executives have promised that the phones will be one of the first ones to get the Nougat update, but that’s something time will tell.

Overall, the pricing is attractive for what the Motorola brand represents and what its competition is doing. Moreover, in the short time I spent with the phone, I could say that the mods do work well and do represent some real innovation from the folks from Chicago. In the meanwhile keep an eye out at the Gizmodo India reviews page for the full review of both the phones.

Moto E3 Is Rumored To Launch In India On September 19

The third generation Moto E is reaching the Indian shores this September 19, according to Android Headlines. Lenovo had quietly announced the Moto E3 in July and India is going to be the first country for the phone to launch. It is likely to priced at Rs 7,000.

The E series is Moto's lowest end smartphone which along with the Moto G have become one of the highest selling smartphones for Lenovo in India, mainly because of the sub Rs 20,000 pricing of the phones.

Despite their low prices, Moto E phones have always had respectable hardware specs. The Moto E3 too is no different. The phone will ship in two variants, one with 1GB RAM with 8GB storage and another with 2GB of RAM with 16GB of storage.

It sports a 5-inch 720p display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection. It is powered by a MediaTek quad-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz. The storage is expandable up to 32GB via a microSD card. There is an 8-megapixel camera on the rear and a 5-megapixel shooter on the front.

All this is powered by a 2,800mAh battery for the 1GB RAM variant and 3500mAh battery for the 2GB variant. It runs pretty much stock Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow with a few additional features from Moto.

The main attraction about the Moto E phones have always been the staggeringly low price. In India, budget and mid-range phones sell the most and Lenovo will look to continue domination of that market with the Moto E3.

Motorola will also start selling the Moto G4 Play on Amazon India before the September 19 launch of the Moto E3, according to Moto's website.

The Moto G4 Play comes powered by a Snapdragon 410 processor with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage, sporting an 8-megapixel camera on the rear and a 5-megapixel shooter on the front.
